The Lower Elementary Montessori Assistant Teacher is responsible for all aspects related to supporting the lead teacher in their efforts to advance the education of the students, utilizing the best principles and practices based on the Montessori pedagogy of education. The assistant supports the teacher in delivering the core Montessori philosophy of respect for the individual child, preparation of the environment, fostering independence, order, and concentration in the child, respect for sensitive periods, recognizing the importance of intrinsic motivation and the absorbent mind.

PART-TIME HOURLY, 10 MONTH POSITION | Hours: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Monday through Friday

In this role, you will:

  • Participate in classroom community events and prepare the classroom environment
  • Support the learning process in the classroom by assisting individuals with academic, social, and personal growth and by delivering lead-teacher-prepared small group lessons
  • Create a positive environment with the lead teacher in which all children feel known and valued and modeling grace and courtesy when interacting with other adults as a model for the children to emulate
  • Collaborate with other assistant teachers and lead teachers to ensure a safe and healthy student experience during lunch and recess each day
  • Participate in level and faculty meetings and all-school professional development meetings
  • Support student social development and behavior in alignment with Positive Discipline guidelines.
  • Communicate in a timely and efficient manner with colleagues
  • Engage in continuing professional growth and development practices
  • Participate in the life of the school through regular presence at major events as a means of supporting the students and the mission of the school

We seek people with:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of two years of classroom experience or working with students. Montessori classroom experience is a plus
  • Passion and joy for working with school-aged children (6-9 years old) and an enthusiasm for learning
  • A clear commitment to diversity, community, and inclusion in school communities, as expressed in RMS’s diversity mission statement
  • Personal traits and communication style that nurture the growth of children
  • An agile, growth mindset and a solid work ethic
  • Works cooperatively with adults and is a collaborative team player

  • Comfort with using technology daily and a willingness to learn and navigate specific platforms, such as Google and student information systems
  • Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations: First Aid/CPR certification required (school will sponsor)
